Tracking Formations
Footage of birds in mid flight is subjected to various kinds of image data analysis. Attempts to ascribe meaning to such imagery stems from the aesthetic side-effects produced by machine-vision. The polygons and tracking lines superimposed on objects of interest by video analytic software are removed from their original contexts and subjected to an aesthetic analysis of shape and form.
In this case it is not the software which reveals any secret information about the flight of the birds, but the other way round: the flight pattern and its tracked movement helps to understand how the machine vision works. The flight movement creates large, animated complex drawings.
When presenting video analytic software with footage of bird murmurations, a number of abstract studies of shape and movement is produced. The inability of algorithms to track accurately single out individual birds within the flock produces a variety of errors and failed attempts of organisation which again add unpredicted elements to the drawings.
